Person of the Year

Person of the Year

The Person of the Year Award is made to someone who is judged to have made the most significant contribution over a year

2021: Carl Alsop

Carl had been a part of VX since 2007.  He had devoted many, many hours to the development of the sport and was a leading figure in the sport.  He had travelled with us abroad to promote the sport, was part of the sport's administration, part of the rules committee and one of the organisers of the amazing 2019 World Championships.  Carl was also a top VX player, being our first V2 World Champion, one of the first players selected to be in the England VX squad where he later became assistant coach then Head Coach.  He was also an amazing club coach having led York VX Club to be the single most successful VX club in the sport's history. Sadly (for VX) Carl has had to withdraw from a lot of his involvement and relinquish most of his roles.  As a thank you for all that he has done for the sport he was made Person of the Year 2021 and also presented with a special thank-you award.  We are delighted that he will be staying on as Head Coach of the England Squad.

2020

There were no Person of the Year Awards made as everything had ceased due to the Covid epidemic

2019: Osman Wong (Hong Kong)

Osman has quite simply done wonders in how he has developed the sport in Hong Kong.  His work has been outstanding

2018: Dr Suman Shankar Tiwari (India)

Suman became the first person to win the award twice when he led VX India to host the V2 World Cup in India.  This was an excellent tournament as VX India managed to get sponsorship for the event from a number of sources including providing accommodation for all players and officials.

2017: Alessandro Foglino (Italy)

Alessandro won the award as he led VX Italy to host the V2 World Cup.  This was the first time a World Cup had been hosted outside of the UK and was a major step forward for the sport.

2016: Matty Horsfield (England)

Matty had worked exceptionally hard to grow the club he set up and led.  He impressed everyone with his effort and commitment to the sport.  As well as his work to grow and develop his club he was a leading player in the sport.

2015: Dr Suman Shankar Tiwari (India)

Suman won the award this year for hosting the sport's first Test Match Series.  This was a major step forward in the development and track record of the sport.

2014: Tony Notarianni (USA)

Tony had worked very hard in promoting the sport in the USA including photography and having a promotional animation made.  On top of that he had regularly travelled to compete in the V2 World Cup.

2013 Eric Clark (Ripon Lions) & John Sheepy (Boroughbridge Lions)

For the second year running the award didn't go to one single person.  On this occasion it was shared by two - Eric Clark of Ripon Lions and John Sheepy of Boroughbridge Lions.  They both recognised the benefits of VX and that the aims of VX are in tune with Lionism.  It was Eric and John who made sure that local Lions clubs were so supportive of VX.

2012 VX Uganda

The first Person of the Year since the sport was rebranded: VX Uganda. Unusually, the award did not go to one individual but was presented to VX Uganda as a body to recognise the work and effort that had been made by several people to grow the sport in Africa

2011 Matti Chasan Bergstein (Denmark)

Matti had encountered VX when he was a student at Gerlev Sports Academy in Denmark with Tom Hildreth.  Tom also taught VX there and Matti became involved, became part of the NGB, was Head Coach of the Denmark VX squad and brought a team over to the UK to compete in the World Cup where they made many friends.

2010 Conrad Broughton (England)

Conrad was our first Person of the Year for his introduction of the sport to North Lincolnshire where he set up a successful club and worked hard to grow and promote the sport
